Back in 804, William of Gellone founded the abbey that still anchors Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert on a bend of the Hérault; pilgrims on the Arles route have stopped here since the 9th century. A lesser-known twist: part of its cloister was sold in 1932 and reassembled at The Cloisters Museum in New York. Thread the valley by time markers you can point to: the 12th‑century Pont du Diable on the UNESCO-listed Camino network, the Clamouse cave mapped in 1945, and vine terraces gripping the Infernet cliffs.
Your day starts with hotel pickup in Montpellier at 9 am, a Mercedes at your disposal and a dedicated driver smoothing the timings: 45 minutes to the Devil’s Bridge, 10 up to the village, 7 to Clamouse. We stroll, taste Picpoul, and visit while he handles the wheel and waits—flexible by design. Swim if currents allow, sit under the plane tree on Place de la Liberté for lunch, and detour to Saint-Jean-de-Fos for its glazed pottery. Expect to be back around 6 pm, unless the gorge light persuades us to linger.
