Between the flat Gave de Pau plains and the limestone walls of the Hautes-Pyrénées, the road kicks up fast: in roughly 60 km you climb from 200 m to over 2,000 m. Aubisque (1,709 m), Soulor (1,474 m), Tourmalet (2,115 m): three legends of the Tour since 1910, with summer pasture bells, the cliffside Route du Litor, and roadside memorials as your markers. On clear days the Pic du Midi observatory peeks over distant ridges, and the Ossau valley opens beneath the cornices.
Your day starts from your Pau hotel: a Mercedes at disposal, bikes in the trunk if you’re riding, feed zones on request if you’re climbing, and photo stops whenever it suits. With a dedicated driver, the plan flexes—drop-offs at each climb, pick-ups at the summit, a detour via the Bénou plateau, or coffee and blueberry tart in Argelès-Gazost while the chauffeur keeps rolling. Tackle the passes without parking stress, wander Laruns or Luz-Saint-Sauveur, and glide back as the shadows stretch along the Gave.
