Back in 1562, Jeanne d’Albret set a giant Indian tortoise shell in the royal nursery at Pau so her son, the future Henri IV, would sleep in it; that shell is still on view inside the castle. From rooms refurnished under Louis-Philippe to the Boulevard des Pyrénées opened in 1900, the route maps power and panorama: on a clear day, some 430 km of peaks line the horizon, a 1946 orientation table fixes the names, and behind you rise Trespoey’s English-style villas, built as early as the 1870s for the mild Béarn winters.
Your driver collects you at your hotel downtown (or at the airport, 10 km), and the Mercedes stays at your disposal for photo stops, site visits, and a taste of dry Jurançon. With a private chauffeur in Pau, it’s eight minutes from the castle to the Boulevard des Pyrénées, then barely 2 km to Trespoey; you step out to explore while the driver waits, then glide via Avenue du Béarn to the Beaumont esplanade. Timings flex with museum hours and weather, eliminating parking headaches.

For the full ridge view, start after 3 pm from October to March: low light sharpens the peaks and the Ossau stands out, especially right after a foehn spell.
