Le Corbusier at Firminy

In 1959, the Firminy-Vert project took shape: a compact modernist ensemble by Le Corbusier, completed posthumously and today recognized by UNESCO. Just 12 km from Saint-Étienne, you’ll find the conical Saint-Pierre Church, the 1967 Unité d’Habitation, the 1965 Maison de la Culture, and the stadium. Look for the Modulor grid guiding façades and walkways, solar orientation for comfort, and the church’s carefully tuned acoustics. A lesser-known fact: the crypt was built first, a full-scale test of local béton brut.
