Follow the D8 climbing out of Saint‑Étienne and, within 20 minutes, the first ridges of the Pilat rise ahead; carry on to Col de l’Œillon (1,236 m) where the Trois Dents skyline frames the Rhône valley. About 35 km from downtown, viewpoints such as Pierre des Trois Évêques and Crêt de l’Œillon open, on clear days, to a sweep from the Vercors to Mont Blanc. Expect fir and beech woods, blueberry heath, remnants of high‑pasture jasseries, then a descent toward Pélussin or Sainte‑Croix‑en‑Jarez, a Carthusian charterhouse founded in 1280 and later transformed into an inhabited village.

Your driver handles the day end to end: hotel pickup at 9:00, flexible stops depending on weather and pace, while you sample Rigotte de Condrieu AOP in Maclas or tour Pélussin’s former tile works. With a private chauffeur based in Saint‑Étienne, the tight switchbacks of Col de la République are no concern, and trailheads on the GR7 or local loops, plus wood‑turning workshops in Burdignes, are easy to reach.
