Stone meets brick, ramparts meet pinewoods: Old Castile lays out military architecture you can read like a manual. Some 55 km northwest of Segovia, Coca Castle stacks polygonal towers above a dry moat, all mudéjar brick wrapped around a Roman-concrete core built for the Fonseca family c.1473. Farther on, Cuéllar shows crenellated walls and the Alburquerque dukes’ alcázar. Here you see how the medieval frontier hinged on the Voltoya and Cega valleys, well away from the Alcázar lines in Segovia.
Logistics stay easy: hotel pickup in Segovia, Mercedes on standby all day, timing left flexible. Your driver handles the road while you tour the parade court, climb the wall-walks, then slip into Cuéllar’s cave-cellar bodegas for a glass of Rueda Verdejo. Figure 45 minutes to Coca, another 25 to Cuéllar, and a late-day return with a quick stop at Zamarramala’s medieval bridge if the light turns golden.

Your chauffeur’s tip
Coca Castle guided entries often start on the half-hour; aim for a slot before 11:00 to dodge school groups, then save Cuéllar for the afternoon when the ramparts quiet down.
