Back in 1891, tightrope artist Henri L’Estrange drew crowds to La Grave by crossing the Romanche on a wire, one of the first spectacles to spotlight the Meije’s glaciers. Today the climb to the Col du Lautaret (2,058 m) runs 28 km along the D1091 from Serre Chevalier, punctuated by real stops: coffee on La Grave’s terrace facing the séracs, the old Guisane works near Le Casset, and the alpine garden founded in 1899 by J.-P. Lachmann. Expect crisp views of the Combeynot ridges, early-wildlife sightings, and a clean northern light on La Meije’s walls.
Your dedicated driver collects you at the hotel with a Mercedes at your disposal, and the pace is yours: photos, a café stop, a short walk. With a private chauffeur in Serre Chevalier, you glide through 900 m of elevation while they handle road, weather, and parking. Visit the Lautaret Alpine Garden (June to September), sample a wedge of Bleu du Queyras in La Grave, walk 20 minutes to the Pont de l’Ascension viewpoint, then descend the Guisane valley in 30–40 minutes depending on traffic and photo breaks.
