Perched at 757 metres on its pink sandstone spur, Haut-Kœnigsbourg has watched over the Alsace plain for eight centuries. Restored by Kaiser Wilhelm II in the early 1900s, the castle unfolds drawbridge, armoury and keep in striking condition. On a clear day the view stretches from the Vosges to the Black Forest — and to the Alps on some winter mornings.
The hairpin climb suits neither coaches nor uncertain parking: your chauffeur drops you at the entrance, you visit with no timetable, he waits. The descent can run through Saint-Hippolyte and its vines or past the Kintzheim eagle sanctuary, as the mood takes you.
