In the slanting morning light, Aquileia’s mosaics glint with gold and earth tones, a still sea of stone underfoot. Founded in 181 BC, the Roman city preserves in its Patriarchal Basilica and the Crypt of Frescoes a rare iconographic cycle of fish, vines, and scripture. Twelve kilometers south, the Grado lagoon spreads into the Adriatic; the island, linked by a causeway since 1936, clusters around Santa Eufemia and Santa Maria delle Grazie, with a table shaped by eel, cuttlefish, and vongole veraci.
Setting out from Trieste, your dedicated chauffeur collects you at the hotel and keeps the day smooth while you explore. A Mercedes at your disposal, timing tuned to light, wind, or appetite: guided visit of the basilica and Roman forum, a scenic run along the Isonzo, a wander through Grado’s calli, then an espresso on Piazza Biagio Marin. Lunch is fish by the lagoon; reservations and waiting handled for you. Count about 1 hour Trieste–Aquileia, then another 20 minutes to Grado.

To see the mosaics with minimal crowds, aim for weekday opening at 9 am, then book a terrace table in Grado on Riva Dandolo if the bora blows—better shelter there.
