Troldhaugen, Edvard Grieg’s villa

Stepping out of Troldsalen after a midday recital, you catch the hush of light rain ruffling Lake Nordås. Grieg’s timber villa peeks through spruces 15 minutes from Bryggen: a portrait-lined salon, the 1892 Steinway, and, just below, the tiny composing hut at the water’s edge. Troldhaugen frames the composer’s summers from 1885 onward and the semi-subterranean concert hall opened in 1985 with a lake panorama. On the way back, a detour to Fantoft reveals the stave church rebuilt after the 1992 fire, a clear view of medieval Norwegian motifs.
