Lake Como and Bellagio

In 1535, Emperor Charles V ordered a survey of fortified villas around Lake Como to police the trade corridors between the Grisons and the Lombard plain—a strategic network long before the Romantic era. Today, just 35 km from Lugano, the western shore links Menaggio, Villa Carlotta (1690) with its historic camellias, and Bellagio at the tip of the lake’s three prongs. In Tremezzo, neoclassical facades mirror the Grigne’s late‑snow caps; on the water, ferries and aliscafi cut fast diagonals. The loop closes in Como beneath its cathedral, begun in 1396, clad in banded marble.
