The first thing you catch is that clean, post-rain smell on river stones, then a wash of soft light over Elizondo’s white farmhouses with red timber frames. Atlantic Navarre looks different here: steep roofs, pelota courts, Latxa sheep, Idiazabal wheels stacked in ventas. Only 12 km away, Zugarramurdi’s caves echo the witchcraft trials of 1610; at 602 m, the Otsondo pass opens rolling views over the Baztan and, beyond, Urdax and the French border. Stone bridges, isolated caseríos, and beech woods stitch the route along the sinuous Baztan River.
Your driver collects you from your Pamplona hotel and keeps the Mercedes on standby so the timing bends to your pace. It’s a 55 km run on the N-121-B to Elizondo for a stroll, while bags stay safe in the car; taste fresh xistorra or drop into the Santxotena museum, then continue to Zugarramurdi and, if it suits, a quick sidestep to Urdax before cresting Otsondo. With a dedicated chauffeur in Pamplona, parking headaches vanish, the day flows, and lingering over a pintxos bar becomes an easy choice.
