The Baztan valley and Elizondo

The first thing you catch is that clean, post-rain smell on river stones, then a wash of soft light over Elizondo’s white farmhouses with red timber frames. Stone bridges, isolated caseríos, and beech woods stitch the route along the sinuous Baztan River.

It’s a 55 km run on the N-121-B to Elizondo for a stroll, while bags stay safe in the car; taste fresh xistorra or drop into the Santxotena museum, then continue to Zugarramurdi and, if it suits, a quick sidestep to Urdax before cresting Otsondo.
