Preikestolen, Pulpit Rock

The sharp scent of wet pine and the low slap of water on rock follow you up from the Rv13. Preikestolen rises 604 meters above the Lysefjord, a glacial trench carved at the end of the last Ice Age. The waymarks from the Norwegian Trekking Association lead you over granite slabs, timber boardwalks, and stair sections built by Nepali Sherpas in 2013–2014. It’s an 8 km out-and-back from Preikestolen Fjellstue, with a 1 h 45–2 h 15 ascent depending on snow patches and wind exposure near the rim.

With a dedicated driver in the Stavanger area, your day starts at the hotel, then runs smoothly to Tau and the trailhead in a comfortable Mercedes stocked with water and a blanket. Your driver handles parking, timing and waits while you hike, adjusting pickup if the summit holds you a little longer. You focus on the trail; they take care of logistics. After the hike, warm snacks await, and there’s time for a short detour to Jørpeland for a fjordside coffee or a quick photo stop at Øygardstøl if the light breaks over Høgsfjorden.
