Sunday bells ring out from Saint-Bernard-de-Menthon as damp stone lanes glisten, and by the 1664 sundial an old-timer slips a few words of Avalin, still heard in some homes. You trace blackened log façades and grain lofts on stilts, then follow the bulbous steeple toward the old village. A short climb—2.5 km—leads to Le Fornet, the last hamlet before the Iseran pass (2,764 m) and the historic gateway to Pisaillas via the old cableway.
From there the pace stays easy: collected at your hotel, you tour Val d’Isère with a dedicated driver in a comfortable Mercedes for a half day. Stop when the light turns perfect, visit while he parks and waits. The route links the church and backstreets, continues up to Le Fornet, then swings down to La Daille’s ski front 3 km below, a neat way to read how the resort evolved from slate-roofed chalets and 1960s lifts to today’s pedestrian upgrades.
